P.S. Did I tell you I can now bend my surgical leg?
Its been a year and a half since my accident and I can FINALLY bend my right knee enough for it to touch my butt. I know I know it sounds dumb but there is A LOT OF THINGS YOU HAVE TO DO WITH YOUR RIGHT KNEE BENT.
It doesn’t always want to cooperate since it still gets swollen but damn.. At least it can do it now. I know it’ll just get better. I actually thought it was “stuck” and would never be fixed..
No matter how far you’ve fallen behind, you can choose at any point to start moving forward. Even though nothing else may be going your way, you can decide to get your thoughts and actions going your way.
Success is a function of your direction and persistence, not your starting point. When…
(I have climbing logs due at the end of the semester so this is how I am gonna organize them I think!)
Grade for the day: B+
Started out the day by trying to do Banana Slug (Hot, rope 3) and got absolutely no where. I had never tried it before so I didn’t exactly get my hopes up and did about as expected for a hot. Decided instead to keep working on Eat Your Wheaties where I got one hold past what I was stuck on yesterday which is good enough. Still stuck on the so called “crux” of the climb though. However saw someone climb it completely differently so maybe I will try her way next time I make it to the wall.
After being discouraged by the first few attempts of the day, I decided to try Night Vision, a Hot, just for kicks. I had never done it before and I am very disinclined to like tiny holds, which is all Night Vision has. But decided to go for it anyways because it was the only rope available. Made it up the first try, which felt good!
Then to end my day I decided to try Dazed and Confused, which is a spiy. For some reason last week it was giving me issues and today I literally just flew up the wall. Maybe it was due to seeing the beginning move and doing it without realizing it.
It felt good to climb two climbs to the top without too much difficulty, especially Night Vision. I need to keep working on Eat Your Wheaties though!
Learned why your chest hurts when you are exercising outside and its cold!
The respiratory branches warm and moisten air that you are breathing in to not damage delicate parts of your lungs (alveoli, etc). When you breathe through your nose, your body is better at warming the air and adding enough moisture. HOWEVER when you are doing something like running outside while it is cold, you are most liking huffing and puffing out of your mouth, which means air is not fully warm when it hits the good stuff. This is what causes that tightness and almost pain in your chest during the winter.
The other day in my exercise science class I learned that what we normally say as calorie is false! A calorie is actually a very minute amount of energy, much smaller than would be useful to measure human food consumption because of our size. Instead we use kilocalories, which we have renamed calories. Confused yet? Read on.
Nutritionally, when we refer to a calorie, we are actually misspeaking and instead should be using the word kilocalorie. One kilocalorie has 1000 calories. So when your bottle of Naked juice says 140 cals per serving, it is actually 140,000 calories because it means it has 140 kcals. Some labels say kcals (many European labels do) but for the most part they say calories. Nutritional calories=kcals.
So in a day if you are eating 1,500 “cals”, you will have just consumed 1,500,000 calories.
But even better, say you burn 200 calories on the treadmill, you just actually burned a monstrous 200,000 real calories.
Go out and burn a few hundred thousands calories for me ;)
So I finished up working in my lab today and decided I wanted to go climbing for a bit. Walked into the gym and right into all of my ruggers! They convinced me to come to practice with them for the first time since I broke my leg. No contact and inside the gym since it was disgusting today but hey :)
I think I am going to go tomorrow and try and do even more.. Maybe this whole comeback thing isn’t such a pipe dream after all?
On the climbing side of things, climbed two climbs yesterday that were Spicy and a Spicy-Plus (Arms Race and Blockbuster). Felt great :) Also got further on a hot that I have been working on (Eat Your Wheaties). I think Ill be able to finish it soon!
